It is the area most exposed to north and north-westerly winds (the tramontane), which build up swell in autumn and winter, while the sea is generally calm in summer. Bizerte, Tunisia's leading fishing port, is the reference point for this zone.

From May to September the sea is generally calm on the North Coast. From November to March Mediterranean depressions can generate waves of 2 to 4 metres. Avoid sailing when the north-westerly wind exceeds 25 km/h.
The prevailing wind in Bizerte is the north-westerly (tramontane) in winter and the thermal sea breeze (north-easterly) in summer. The southerly sirocco (chehili) can blow in summer and turn the sea rough within a few hours.
