Other coastal zones
Tunisia's east coast, from Cap Bon to Sfax, runs along the northern Gulf of Gabès. It is the country's longest coast, home to the major seaside resorts (Hammamet, Sousse, Monastir) and leading fishing ports (Mahdia, Sfax). This zone is relatively sheltered from westerly winds but exposed to the north-easterly (grigale) and south-easterly (sirocco) winds.
Frequently asked questions
Generally no. The East Coast is one of the calmest in the Mediterranean. Waves rarely exceed 1.5 m except during strong north-easterly wind episodes. The beach season runs from May to October.
The shallow waters of the Gulf of Gabès and runoff from wadis after rain sometimes colour the sea. This is a natural and temporary phenomenon.
